SALA 2022: David Hume - Canaletto’s Camera

  • Light Gallery Adelaide 138 Richmond Road Marleston Australia (map)

We are delighted to have long time friend of the CCP David Hume joining us for SALA festival 2022.

Hume’s exhibition takes Venice as its starting point and examines the techniques of Canaletto, the most famous painter of Venetian cityscapes.

Canaletto used an early optical device - the camera obscura - to aid him in sketching and help construct his large paintings from many smaller observations.

Hume in turn constructs his own large panoramic photographs using a technique of partially winding on the film in his camera between exposures, thus overlapping smaller images into complete scenes. The results are unpredictable, sometimes unexpected, and show us new ways of seeing familiar places.

Some images, printed on artists heavyweight canvas, are then overworked in pastel and oil, blurring the distinction between painting and photography.

As part of his Masters studies in Contemporary Art, Hume is researching Canaletto’s techniques, and here presents new ideas on the use of perspective and the development of modern art towards cubism.

Join us opening night Friday 29th July 6-8 pm

Or if you can’t make it to opening night the exhibition will be in the gallery Friday 29th July – Friday 2nd September Hours: 9-5 Mon-Fri and by appointment.
